The process of getting marble from its natural home in a quarry to a domestic kitchen counter-top or bathroom takes its time, however, the results are well worth the wait.
Marble is actually a metamorphic rock which man has used as building and artistic material for millennia, due to its outstanding beauty and inherent properties, which combine both strength and malleability. Modern machinery, transport and technology have made marble increasingly accessible and affordable, which is why it has graced countless homes with its luxurious and timeless elegance.
Marble is formed when limestone is exposed to high temperatures and pressures and the calcite forming the limestone recrystallizes forming a denser rock. The variety of colors found in marble are created due to the presence of minor amounts of impurities being incorporated into the natural stone, during this process.
Once a substantial marble deposit (possibly also with desirable color, pattern, and composition) is identified, geologists take samples of the natural stone, which is then processed so that the exact type and color of marble extracted can be verified.
If the quarry is then thought to be viable, the challenges of obtaining permits, accessing and actually mining the quarry are then faced.
During the extraction process, heavy machinery is used to cut out large pieces of marble from the ground and transported from the quarry, careful to avoid damaging the stone.
The marble cubes are taken to the fabrication shop, where the marble is cut into slabs using heavy machinery. The slabs can be cut to the desired thickness, which is usually of 2 or 3 centimeters.
The individual slabs are then attached to special clamps through which they are transported to the finishing area, where it will be polished using diamond-encrusted abrasive pad.
A uniform coat of epoxy sealer is then sprayed onto the surface, where it is left to dry for 48 hours, aided by heat lamps.
Once the polishing and sealing processes are completed on both sides of the slab, it is shipped out to distributors, where customers can examine the slabs in all their glory and select one of the right color and markings to suit their specific projects.
