How To Differentiate Between Real And Fake Marble Tiles
Marble has been used for many thousands of years for construction, sculpting and for decorative purposes. Its use dates to ancient Greek and Roman times and to this day marble is still considered to be one of the most durable building materials to be found. It is still widely used in homes and offices across the world.
Marble is a metamorphic stone which is created when limestone is compressed and heated within the earth’s crust and it is this that makes it so tough when compared to other stones such as granite. The coloring within comes from impurities in the stone caused by the effects of different minerals in its makeup.
Not only is it a very durable stone, but marble is also very beautiful and pleasing to the eye. It is so multi-functional that it can be used internally and externally for flooring, walls, worktops, mantels, furniture and smaller decorative pieces. Sculptors like to use it as it is so easy to work with.
Marble tiles are ideal, especially for flooring and if good care is taken of them, they will last for many years. There are very many colors of marble available which are another reason for it being so popular. The one possible drawback about marble is that it is expensive. For this reason, it has been found that some unscrupulous people are trying to pass off fake marble tiles as the genuine article and selling it cheaper or sometimes even for the same price!
Although real marble is considered so durable, it does need to be cared for very conscientiously otherwise it will suffer from wear and tear and discoloring as much as any other cheaper stone. Therefore, you must clean up any spillages immediately and stick to a strict cleaning and maintenance regime. Marble is especially susceptible to damage and staining from any acidic products as these will react with the surface of the tile. In case of spillage, it is best just to use soap and water rather than any chemical cleaning products.
If you have fake marble tiles, however, this is not the case, because they are not proper marble but only a certain percentage. They will not have the same problems and will not need so much care and attention. Fake marble tiles are made by combining other elements with a real marble. These elements, for example, are- polyester resin which actually makes it initially more resilient to damage effect than real marble.
You may think that, with being cheaper and more resilient to damage, this makes fake marble tiles a better proposition. This is not the case as, in the long run, real marble is by far a superior product and will outlast any fake copies. You can also notice differences such as the feel and texture of real marble as opposed to fake. Also, the color patterns and effects are different. These differences are only subtle but with careful scrutiny, they can be spotted.
So, this is something to be aware of when you are buying marble tiles…which are cheap, fake copies.
